I’ll be starting college next month, which is going to involve a lot of walking around campus. I have asthma, which can be aggravated by things like cigarette smoke. This is unfortunate because my campus isn’t “Smoke Free”. There are designated smoking areas but I have to walk through some of them to get to class (there is one right outside of the building most of my classes are in, and right outside of the Student Union).
I asked my doctor and she said that I might benefit from wearing a surgical mask when outside to help filter some of the air so that I’m not sent into a coughing fit or an asthma attack. I have a few options, like
1) Not wear one.
2) Wearing a surgical style one.
3) Or wear one with some fashionable pattern or style.
The fashionable designs are made to look cute, mostly for people in Asian countries like China where there is a lot of smog. They’re available in animals, flower patterns, band logos, blah blah.
I was wondering if anyone has experience with these types of mask or this type of situation. I don’t want to die every time I walk through someones smoke, but I also don’t want to be that one weird girl on campus that is recognizable out of 25,000 people because I wear an air filter face mask when I walk around. Is this a major fashion no-no, or can I get away with it?
Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
